Let's make some serious cash with FantasySP's Week 9 edition of NFL best bets!
Week 9 started with a bang as Jonathan Taylor and Carson Wentz led the Indianapolis Colts to a convincing 45-30 victory over the injury-riddled New York Jets. The standings are beginning to shape up across the NFL and no team in the AFC has pulled away. The 4-5 Colts are very much still in the picture, although the 2-6 Jets should begin thinking about next season. As the postseason picture begins to become more clear, it's time to gear up for this week's edition of NFL best bets. It takes a lot of energy and research to have success over the course of a season when it comes to sports betting. Over the last three weeks, we are 9-6 with our picks. Let's make some real money in Week 9. Here at FantasySP, we are committed to helping you cash. Remember, if you win 55% of your bets, you are a really good gambler. We are looking at some eye-opening odds this week and will help you decipher the best games to place your money on, whether it's moneylines, over-unders, or prop bets. With that, let's dive in.
WEEK 9 NFL BEST BETS
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints (-6)
Although the Saints lost Jameis Winston for the season, third-stringer Trevor Siemian filled in admirably during last week's upset victory over Tom Brady and the reigning Super Bowl champs. Despite the fact that Taysom Hill is expected to suit up this week after dealing with concussion symptoms, Sean Payton has named Siemian the starter. Still, Hill is expected to see some snaps and will be rotated in depending on the game flow. New Orleans' strength isn't their passing game anyway, so the starting quarterback doesn't make an enormous difference to me. Siemian proved that he can manage a game enough to get a victory. The Saints' strengths are the running game, featuring Alvin Kamara and the newly acquired Mark Ingram, as well as their defense. Marcus Lattimore is going to shut down whoever he lines up against. But it won't be Calvin Ridley.
The Atlanta Falcons will be without their superstar wideout, who has stepped away from the game to focus on personal problems. The Falcons have been pretty atrocious on both sides of the football, but I do expect this game to be closer than one might expect given each team's respective records. Nonetheless, I'm comfortable placing my money on the Saints in this clash of NFC South rivals. The Saints play very well on their home field and the Falcons are 4-6 as underdogs against the spread over their last 10 contests. The Saints should have no problem covering the six-point spread.
The Pick: Saints (-6)
Prediction: 24-14 Saints
Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys (-10)
This game's spread has sky-rocketed since opening at 4.5 points. Dallas is coming off an impressive primetime victory over the Minnesota Vikings with Cooper Rush under center. Now, they get superstar quarterback Dak Prescott back into a loaded offense featuring Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, and CeeDee Lamb. Plus, Dallas should expect Michael Gallup back from Injured Reserve after a several-week absence.
On the other side of the ball, the Denver Broncos may have given up on their season by trading away pass rusher Von Miller. And even though Denver has Jerry Jeudy back in the lineup, second-year tight end Noah Fant will be inactive after testing positive for COVID-19. It's hard to imagine Denver's dink-and-dump offense keeping up with the high-powered Cowboys. Although the spread if a bit loft, Dallas should have no problem taking care of business in Jerry World. They are 9-1 in their last 10 contests against the spread.
The Pick: Cowboys (-10)
Prediction: 37-24 Cowboys
New England Patriots at Carolina Panthers (+3.5)
This game's spread has been changing throughout the week due to the uncertainty of Sam Darnold's availability for the Panthers. Darnold is highly questionable due to a shoulder injury and concussion symptoms. Even if he is able to play, he has been on a massive downward spiral since Carolina's miraculous 3-0 start to the season. The Panthers have lost four of their last five games and even though they might get Christian McCaffrey back, it's doubtful that CMC will be at full strength. And nobody wants to see P.J. Walker starting at quarterback for the Panthers if Darnold is unable to suit up.
Meanwhile, the Patriots have been playing quite well despite the fact that rookie quarterback Mac Jones is coming off his worst performance of the season. After eclipsing 300 yards and tossing two touchdowns without turning the ball over in Week 7 against the Jets, Jones only managed 218 scoreless passing yards against the Chargers last week. Although it was ugly, New England escaped with their second consecutive victory and have salvaged their season. This is a must-win for both teams and it's hard to envision Bill Belichick not finding a way to defeat the undermanned Panthers.
The Pick: Patriots -3.5
Prediction: 26-20 Patriots

Las Vegas Raiders at New York Giants (+3)
The G-Men have played well this season despite their 2-6 record. They were an offsides penalty away from upsetting the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football last week. They also have very close losses to Washington and Philly this season. Daniel Jones has played well despite the lack of Saquon Barkley and Kenny Golladay for much of the season. The G-Men will again be without Barkley, who is on the COVID-19 list, and Sterling Shepard will also be out, but the Giants will get Golladay back, and rookie Kadarius Toney has emerged as a significant threat whenever he touches the ball. Plus, this is a revenge game for Devontae Booker. With Barkley inactive, Booker will be the featured back and should do some damage in both the running and passing game.
The Raiders are probably the weakest 5-2 team in the National Football League. Emotions have to be high after the recent news regarding Henry Ruggs. Derek Carr's top wideout won't be on the field so it will be up to Darren Waller, Hunter Renfrow, and Bryan Edwards to carry the Vegas pass catchers. Vegas is only 4-6 against the spread as favorites and I don't think they are nearly as good as their record suggests. Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham did an excellent job slowing down Patrick Mahomes in Week 8, and I think he'll do the same against Carr in Week 9. However, I think the Raiders will narrowly avoid the upset loss. But they won't cover the spread.
The Pick: Giants +3
Prediction: 28-26 Raiders
Los Angeles Chargers at Philadelphia Eagles (+1.5)
After suffering a backbreaking defeat to New England last week, now is the time to place your wagers on Justin Herbert and the Chargers. Yes, the Chargers have not looked quite as dominant as of late and the Eagles are coming off a 44-6 thrashing of the winless Detroit Lions. However, you aren't going to get many opportunities to bet on the superior team while laying less than a field goal. I'm placing multiple units on this one. I think the Chargers emerge victorious fairly easily in this one.
The Pick: Chargers (-1.5)
Prediction: 31-23 Chargers

For once, if you're stressed about your lineup this week, that's actually a good thing: Itmeans that you've maneuvered your way into the final round of playoffs.
Congrats on making it this far in the most replacement-laden fantasy season we've ever seen.
While making it this far is an achievement unto itself, you can't coast and bench your starters like an NFL first seed playoff team. If anything, this is the most stressful week of them all: one wrong move, and you've lost your Super Bowl (and a hell of a lot of money).
Take home the bag and the bragging rights by making these drops, pops and shops in the final round of playoffs.

Wayne Gallman

While the Giants record has slowly been getting better as the season goes on, their options at running back seem to be dwindling. Many lost a first round pick with Saquon's early-season ACL tear, then lost backup Devonta Freeman to an ankle injury and COVID precautions. That left Wayne Gallman, Alfred Morris, and Dion Lewis to split carries.
While Gallman has been a must-start since Week 7, this Giants mysteriously sat him in the second half in favor of Alfred Morris. Gallman only got 9 carries for 29 yards, and if there's any question about his production in Week 16 against Baltimore, he may have to sit this one out.

JuJu Smith-Schuster
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (19) warms up before the game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium.Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports
JuJu is not a bad player, but he's brought about a nasty superstition of sorts that may have cost the Steelers their last two games. See, JuJu decided to dance on the Bills logo for the gram (or in this case, the TikTok), a move that's seen as disrespectful amongst athletes.
@juju Keep it going tonight 🥶🤩🤣 #fyp #nfl #steelers

Noting that it gave them extra motivation in their 26-15 win, the Bills made it clear that JuJu's moves brought the Steelers bad juju. Going against the grain, Smith-Schuster decided that "being yourself" was the best thing for the team, and the Bengals definitely targeted him for it: he had one fantasy point this week. Whether Juju dances or not, it may be wise to sit him against a stingy Colts secondary this week for the championship game.

With Gibson out and Washington making a play for an NFC East playoff spot, J.D. McKissic has stepped up as someone to pop into the final round of playoffs. He's coming off a revenge game as a former Seahawk with 13 carries for 51 yards and 9 catches for 56 yards and a receiving touchdown. While Washington (narrowly) lost that game, McKissic has emerged as a fantasy winner—and he will likely make you one too after a Week 16 matchup against the Panthers.

Things are finally looking up for this former fantasy first-rounder: after escaping the burning building that is the New York Jets, Bell has been a quiet backup to Clyde Edwards-Helaire on a pass-happy Chiefs offense. However, Edwards-Helaire suffered a hip/leg injury in Week 15, allowing Bell to garner 15 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Bell is currently set to become the Chiefs' bell cow this week with CEH out, creating a tantalizing matchup against a Falcons defense that just gave up over 400 yards.

Robert Woods

Woods is the 11th overall fantasy receiver, so if he's on your roster, he's probably part of why you're here. But it's worth noting that the Rams are coming off a humiliating loss to the Jets as they face a bitter divisional rival in the Seattle Seahawks. Although Woods logged only 5 catches for 33 yards in their last Seahawks showdown, teams are motivated to come back from big losses—even more so against division rivals. As the Rams hunt for a playoff slot, expect Woods to get Top 10 numbers against a giving Seahawks secondary.

The only thing hurting this week are Carson's chances of ever returning for the Eagles: Jalen Hurts impressed in a 300+ yard debut, replete with three magnificent touchdowns. There's not much else to say besides Jalen proved he's the real deal (for this season, at least).

Greg Ward
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Greg Ward (84) celebrates a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals during the first half at State Farm Stadium.Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports
A beneficiary of this rejuvenated offense, Ward was a popular end zone target this week with two touchdowns and 15 fantasy points. Although he only caught 4 catches for 15 yards, he's caught three touchdowns over the past three games. The good news is that he's already building chemistry with Hurts, and as a green quarterback, Hurts will likely get the ball to someone he obviously trusts. Ward remains a touchdown-dependent flex, but he could be worth it in a weak Week 16 game against the Cowboys.

Tony Pollard

It seems like every quality backup running back has been rostered at this point, with the peculiar exception of Tony Pollard. Available in over half of ESPN leagues, Pollard racked up 28 fantasy points with 69 rushing yards, 63 receiving yards, and two rushing touchdowns.
Since the Cowboys are playing the Eagles in Week 16, this stands to be a good fantasy matchup for both teams if they can continue to move their offenses in Week 15 fashion.

Week 14 (1-3) was not the best week for bettors, so let's get some wins to make up for it on Sunday.
The Colts handled their business in Las Vegas, like an air conditioning repairman in the desert heat. Meanwhile, the Raiders went on to lose their Thursday night game behind a competent Mariota performance, but seem to be melting down, like an ice cream cone in the desert heat. Keep that in mind for possible fade opportunities in the coming weeks.
As for our losses, it was an assortment of disappointments. The Taysom Hill Traveling Show seems to have come to an unceremonious end. Backups starting this late in the year have typically meant variance, so I wasn't so surprised by Jalen Hurts hurting my wallet.
The Chargers actually managed to beat the Falcons somehow. Even more amazing? It came down to the final seconds and Matt Ryan's line looked like this: 21/32, 224 yards, 1 TD, and 3 INTs. Even more amazing? Justin Herbert's line looked like this: 36/44. 243 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT. I really can't wrap my head around how they won this game and how Herbert could complete 36 passes WITHOUT him throwing over 281.5 yards. Another classic football mystery for the ages.
Lastly, the Steelers didn't even bother showing up to Buffalo. The drop parade continued for the Pittsburgh wide receivers and Josh Allen has mastered cutting up highly rated defenses.
Minnesota Vikings -3 over Chicago Bears
This is a week of overwhelming favorites, each with their own particular hook that should scare off any seasoned bettor. Tennessee -9, Tampa Bay -6.5, Indy -7.5, Seattle -6.5, Baltimore -13, LA Rams -17, Cleveland -6.5, and Pittsburgh -14.5? All too rich for my blood, sir. However, something like a passable Minnesota Vikings team, who easily handled the Chicago Bears on Monday night just over a month ago on the road. Justin Jefferson has been a revelation for the offense, filling the hole left by the Stefon Diggs trade, and joining some hallowed company in the record books. I'd look for him to go over 4.5 RECEPTIONS to power a nice win and cover.

Super Bowl preview? It's possible. The Chiefs feel undeniable in a way that's both terrifying and comforting. You know that they will score and score and score. The Saints have stayed afloat without Drew Brees for a few weeks, which all came to a head against a floundering Philly team, who got a shot of life in the form of Jalen Hurts. If they had a hard time containing or keeping up on offense against him, may I re-introduce you to Patrick Mahomes. Things have gotten more interesting given the announcement that Drew Brees, 11 broken ribs and collapsed lung, will return to his starting position. However, the football gods gave and take away in equal measure. Michael Thomas will be out and that offense seemed to suffer more without the 40 year old signal caller.
Miami Dolphins -1.5 over New England Patriots
This line starting at 2.5 and working it's way down to 1.5 is like manna from heaven. The Patriots have a few extra days to prepare after the Thursday night dismantling by the Rams and the Dolphins are coming off a game against the Chiefs that they kept much closer than they had any right to. (Breaking a few -11.5 and Chief win by 14+ points along the way.) The Miami D is for real, Xavien Howard is an interception machine, and Tua is a born leader. Belichick will find a way to make this a grind it out, ball control, and last possession wins kind of game, but I'm willing to bet the Dolphins kick that game winning field for the win.
Arizona Cardinals/Philadelphia Eagles over 49.5
Jalen Hurts tucks the ball to run, pointing for a block, against the Saints. JOE LAMBERTI/COURIER POST
The Cardinals and Eagles have not been known for their defenses this season, falling outside of the top 10. The Cardinals are 28th in points allowed, the Eagles are 27th in turnovers caused, and each struggles getting opposing offenses off the field. However, the Cardinals offense, powered by Kyler and DeAndre, has been averaging over 30 points a game at home. That feels like a pretty easy floor for them to hit with a much higher potential ceiling. That leaves the Eagles to pick up the slack for two, maybe, three scores, which feels very doable for the reinvigorated Philly team and their quarterback, who loves food analogies.
For most fantasy football leagues, Week 15 marks the second round of fantasy playoffs.
As you may have learned from last week, playoffs require a slightly different strategy. Now is not the time to gamble on a player that could develop—you need to pick the perfect players to overperform in Week 15, depending on their matchups, injury reports, and various other factors.
A win this week could lead to third, second or even a first place cash prize—or it could mean your frenemy claims your $100 entry fee and your dignity. If you want to cash in next week, here are some drops, pops and shops to make in the second round of fantasy playoffs.

Antonio Brown

When Antonio Brown became a fantasy factor in Week 9, fantasy managers who stashed him early thought their golden egg would hatch soon enough. While there's still a chance to cash in on this investment in Week 15 against the Falcons, the fact is that Brown has been closer to gooseggs than golden ones. In his five weeks of play, he's gotten 25 total receptions, but he hasn't been the number one overall pick he once was in 2017. He might be one of Brady's favorite targets, but so are Mike Evans, Gronk and apparently Scotty Miller.

In Week 8, I suggested dropping Ezekiel Elliott, which would have been a fantasy faux pas in any year before 2020. If you kept Elliott, you enjoyed his 18-point game against the Vikings, but every other start has been a disappointment for the former fantasy first-rounder. Recovering from a calf injury, Elliott split carries with Tony Pollard this week and converted 12 carries into a measly 48 yards. Hurt as he heads into a matchup against the fourth best NFL run defense, things look sour for Elliott in Week 15. Consider starting someone else if possible, like David Montgomery, D'Andre Swift, or Melvin Gordon.

A skyrocketing fantasy star since the bye, David Montgomery is everything you wanted this Bears running back to be. In the last three games, Montgomery has notched nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns, and the trend will likely continue against the Vikings this week. Montgomery is in set-it-and-forget-it territory for the rest of playoffs, so keep him locked in your lineup as long as you last.

After a three-week absence, D'Andre Swift is back, and he's here to lead the Lions running back committee without question. Unlike other NFL RB committees (hello San Francisco), the Lions have their committee order in check, meaning Swift is a sure thing when he's healthy. Although he only managed seven carries for 24 yards, a touchdown saved Swift fantasy owners last week, redeeming his value as a playoff-level player. Facing a weak Titans run defense this week, Swift could get even more work if Stafford is injured in Week 15.

Emmanuel Sanders

Drew Brees, or not Drew Brees—that is the question in Week 15.
Whether Drew breezes back for a surefire shootout against the Chiefs or not, it looks like veteran Emmanuel Sanders will get work no matter what. Disappointingly spotty all season, Sanders has produced decent numbers as a flex option, but Week 15 provides a great matchup for someone Taysom Hill has been targeting as well. Although a touchdown saved him last week, Sanders stands to get some catches this week—after all, he's gotten at least three in the past four games.

Promoted from the practice squad in Week 13, Hansen has scored 12 catches for 157 yards over the past two weeks. While he's been relegated back to the practice squad as of Monday, it's likely that he could return in Week 15. Upgraded or not, he's worth stashing for the next two weeks just in case. While Calvin Ridley is a definite play as the seventh overall fantasy receiver, fellow Falcons wide receiver Russell Gage is available in 85 percent of ESPN leagues. Gage's week went particularly well because he threw a 39-yard touchdown to Calvin Ridley, but he still has a prime matchup against a Tampa Bay defense that's given up the ninth most yards all season. Although the Buccaneers have talented safeties, Gage's position as WR2 positions him to get solid volume in Week 15.

Fantasy is always a gamble, but there are still sure bets on waivers that deliver on their promise. That was Tim Patrick this season: I suggested picking him up in Week 7, and here he is in the playoffs, averagng 10.2 points per game at the 35th overall receiver. Miraculously, Patrick is still available in 77 percent of ESPN leagues, which is surprising for Denver's most consistent red zone target. Sure, they actually played an NFL game without a quarterback, but Patrick and Melvin Gordon might be the most stable aspects of this shaky offense. Ignore the noise and pick up Patrick if he's still available in your league for Week 15.
